A foodie is often intrigued by the kind of flavours a specific food offers.
Being one myself, I was blown away by the plethora of moods experienced when I took my first bite of vada pav, as a student, who was late for his lecture. That one vada pav didn’t just fill my stomach, but it also made me think (the businessman’s son that sees business in everything), that almost every nook and corner of this city, and the state has a stall, and every one of those stalls sellstill they run out of stocks.
That’s massive business and a massive fan following for one snack.
I began to wonder, who came up with this idea? Who really put the vada in the pav and had been completely forgotten about after that day, until one day, my mentor Ashok Mishra, a celebrated writer in Bollywood, told me the sad tale of Ashok Vaidya, the man who invented the snack and how he was being asked to re-locate/shut shop if he did not abide by the orders.
This is the story of his famous creation, and its not-so-famous creater.
Vada Pav Inc. derives its name from the snack of course, but it is also my small dedication to the documentary that inspired me, Food, Inc.
