Anglish - What if English Were 100% Germanic?

05:33
Here's a little video about a something that caught my interest recently: Anglish, a new "pure" Germanic variety of English with all of its non-Germanic vocabulary removed and replaced by Germanic words. Anglish isn't a big movement as far as I know, but it's interesting! Are Yiddish and Hebrew Similar?

03:07
Yiddish and Hebrew are often thought to be closely related languages because of their shared script, and because they are both connected with the Jewish people. But the truth is that Yiddish and Hebrew and basically unrelated to each other. Hebrew is a Semitic language, most closely related with Arabic, while Yiddish is a Germanic language most closely related to German. Is English Really a Germanic Language?

09:45
Today we delve into the history of the English language and look at the Germanic, Romance, and other influences that have shaped the Modern English of today. @4:39 to 4:50 there's an error: the text should say "Middle English" not "Modern English". Both are true, but at that moment I'm talking about the changes from OE to Middle English. Support Langfocus on Patreon: http://patreon.com/langfocus Special thanks to: BJ Peter DeLaCruz, Michael Cuomo, Nicholas Shelokov, Sebastian Langshaw, Brandon Gonzalez, Brian Michalowski, Adrian Zhang, Vadim Sobolev, Yixin Alfred Wong, Raymond Thomas, Simon Blanchet, Ryan Marquardt, Sky Vied, Romain Paulus, Panot, Erik Edelmann, Bennet, James Zavaleta, Ulrike Baumann, Ian Martyn, Justin Faist, Jeff Miller, Stephen Lawson, Howard Stratton, George Greene, Panthea Madjidi, Nicholas Gentry, Sergios Tsakatikas, Bruno Filippi, Sergio Tsakatikas, Qarion, Pedro Flores, Raymond Thomas, Marco Antonio Barcellos Junior, and David Beitler for their generous Patreon support. **Clarification regarding the word "in": A lot of people have commented saying that "in" is of Germanic origin, which matches what I had previously thought. When researching this video I looked up the etymology of "in" and read that it's of Latin origin, meaning "into, in, on, upon". So I thought that it must have been one of the early borrowings into Germanic dialects that I mentioned in the video. But I went back and checked the source again, and I realized that the dictionary entry I was reading was for the PREFIX "in-", not the standalone word. The standalone word has always existed in the Germanic language family. And ultimately, both the Germanic and Latin words come from the Proto-Indo-European word "en".** http://facebook.com/langfocus http://instagram.com/langfocus http://twitter.com/langfocus http://langfocus.com Music: Main music 1: “Night Music” by Kevin MacLeod. (Edge #1) Consistency is KING - Why and How to Stick to a Study Schedule

06:37
You`ve probably heard that it`s better to study 30 minutes a day than it is to study for 3.5 hours once a week. Here are a couple new ways to think about that. And learn HOW to be consistent, since the execution is where most people fall short. Are Some People Just Naturally Good With Languages?

07:05
A lot of people out there tell themselves that they`re *"not good with languages*" and give themselves an excuse to avoid studying one. But the truth is that anybody can learn a language well with the right habits and strategies. Fluent in Tagalog?! After Just One Week?!

04:21
Last week I declared my intention to start studying Tagalog, and guess what - I did. I studied everyday the past week, using audio CDs, a phrasebook, a textbook, anki flashcards, and Skype lessons with a teacher through italki. The results? You can judge. I`m only a week in, but it was a good week and I learned a lot of basic Tagalog that forms that beginning of my base. Tagalog is fun! The sentence structure is fairly complicated, and syntax changes depending on the situation, but challenge accepted! The North Germanic Languages of the Nordic Nations

10:33
**** A new version of this video is available here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=onduQjgAj8Y&t=0s This video is all about the North Germanic languages of Scandinavia and the other Nordic nations. *** Lots of people are commenting about the example sentences with audio. To answer your questions, no the sentences are not from Google Translate. I made a request on the LangFocus Facebook page for native speakers to give me a couple sentences with audio, but no native speakers sent me audio. I had one volunteer who was not a native speaker, but studies Norwegian and Swedish. She helped me by supplying those sentences. I know they`re not perfect, but don`t be too critical, please. She did her best as a learner, when there were no other volunteers.*** Support Langfocus on Patreon: http://patreon.com/langfocus Special thanks to: Nicholas Shelokov, 谷雨 穆, Anders Westlund, and Kaan Ergen for their generous Patreon support. http://facebook.com/langfocus http://instagram.com/langfocus http://twitter.com/langfocus http://langfocus.com Music: "The Cleg and the Fly - Kleggen og Fluga" "Halling" from album "25 Norwegian Folk Songs and Dances, Op.17 (Grieg, Edvard) Used under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license.
