How to Avoid Cryptojacking on a Mac (Unwanted Cryptocurrency Mining)

03:31
In this brief tutorial, we'll show you how to avoid unwanted cryptocurrency mining (also known as cryptojacking) on your Mac. We'll cover how to tell if mining is happening in the background, and what you can do to stop it. --- Did you know that Mac apps, and even Web sites, can secretly mine cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Monero, and a host of others--in the background, and without your consent? Surreptitious mining can have some unwanted side effects for your Mac or other device, such as: • slowness • excessive heat • battery drain • fan noise • high CPU usage If you use a Mac, it's fairly easy to tell whether a particular app is causing a drain on your system, by using an included utility called Activity Monitor. The easiest way to find Activity Monitor is to do a Spotlight search for it. Once you've opened the app, you can click-and-hold on the app's icon in the Dock to see Options you may want to use such as Keep in Dock and Open at Login. You can also go to the Dock Icon menu and choose Show CPU History. Next, let's set up a couple of other features. Click on the View menu, select Update frequency as desired; I prefer to have it update every second. By default, Activity Monitor only shows you your own processes, but in some cases you may wish to select "All Processes" or "All Processes, Hierarchically" to identify the source of high CPU usage. You can close Activity Monitor's main window and leave it running in the background to continuously monitor your Mac's CPU usage. Now that you've seen the basics, let's see what happens when we launch an app from the Mac App Store that briefly included some undesirable cryptocurrency mining. Don't try this at home! As you can see, the CPU utilization increases significantly. When you encounter a suspected mining process, you can try forcing the process to quit, or you may need to quit the parent process, or in some cases you may need to run anti-virus software to remove a very persistent miner. It's also possible for Web sites to run cryptocurrency miners in the background. If you notice your CPU spiking, close any tabs or windows you've opened recently until you find the culprit. Also, don't be alarmed about every app that happens to use your CPU! Certain legitimate apps truly need to use a lot of processing power to get jobs done, including video or audio encoding software like Handbrake, iMovie, and iTunes. CIA Porn Accusation Emails: Real, Or Scams?

Now, you know you haven't committed any acts of pedophilia. But you might be wondering, does the CIA really have evidence they think connects you to this crime? The e-mail claims that the sender has the power to expunge your records from this database, as long as you transfer $10,000 worth of Bitcoins. Lucky you, this CIA representative is corrupt, and you can escape incarceration if you pony up enough cash. So what's the deal? Is the CIA really coming after you? Nope. This is yet another example of a porn blackmail scam e-mail, designed to scare victims into paying a ransom. Similar scam e-mails have claimed that a hacker has gotten into your webcam and filmed you watching pornography, and that they'll release their video evidence to all of your contacts unless you pay a ransom. Again, it's a common scam. It's extremely unlikely that some random cybercriminal has hacked into your webcam, regardless of how convincing the e-mail may seem. Whichever variant of e-mail you received, don't panic, and don't fall for it. You can safely delete the e-mail and rest at ease. How to Report Scam Emails - Phishing, Fraud, Blackmail, or Extortion

03:51
Please like, subscribe, & share this video to raise awareness! Save 50% on the ultimate Mac protection suite (link & coupon below) Also subscribe to our audio podcast: http://podcast.intego.com =Transcript= If you've received an e-mail that you believe may be a phishing or extortion scam, designed to trick you into giving up your login information or paying a ransom, you can safely delete it. But before you do, perhaps you want to help stick it to the bad buys by reporting that e-mail to the authorities. The most effective way to report scam e-mails is to pass along the full e-mail including the complete headers. The headers include all the behind-the-scenes details about an e-mail message, including where it came from and how it got to you. Authorities can sometimes use this information to track down or build a stronger case against cybercriminals. First, let's show you how to display the e-mail headers if you're using Apple Mail, or the web-based version of Gmail, and then we'll cover where to forward that information. -Apple Mail- To see the full e-mail headers, click on View, then Message, then Raw Source. You can either copy and paste all this into a new e-mail, or you can save this as a file and attach it to your report. Let's look at the Save method. Go to File, Save As…, make sure it's somewhere you'll find it, and click Save. Next, compose a new message and address it to the organizations you want to report the scam to (we'll discuss this more in a minute). Add an appropriate subject, then drag the e-mail's raw source file onto the e-mail body. Now you're ready to hit send. -Gmail- To see the headers, click on the three vertical dots, then "Show original." Similar to Apple Mail, you can copy the data to the clipboard, or you can download the e-mail's raw source code as a file, and attach it to a report. -Where to Report Scam E-mails- There are a number of organizations to which you can report an e-mail that appears to be a phishing or extortion scam. You can forward any such e-mail, with complete headers, to the Anti-Phishing Working Group at [email protected] and they'll work with a variety of organizations to try to take down the scammer. [email protected] If you're a U.S. resident or you have reason the believe the sender might be, or if the e-mail impersonates a U.S. government agency, you can also forward the e-mail to [email protected] to report it to the U.S. federal government. Or if the message is U.S. tax fraud claiming to be from the IRS, send it to [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] For UK tax scams, forward them to [email protected] For fraudulent e-mails that claim to be from Apple, forward them to [email protected] Check out our related video, CIA Porn Accusation Emails: Real, Or Scams? https://youtu.be/V4GXOhBlcAg • If you liked this video, be sure to give it a thumbs-up and subscribe to our channel (and click on the bell!) for future updates. • Comment below on what Apple security topics you'd like us to cover. • Also, please share this video if you think your friends will enjoy it too. =Special Offer= If you want the world's best Mac protection software on the market, new customers can save 50% by going to… https://www.intego.com/landing/intego-youtube-promo …and using coupon code INTEGOYT at checkout. =Related Articles= CIA Porn Accusation Emails: Here’s What Mac Users Need to Know: https://www.intego.com/mac-security-blog/cia-porn-accusation-emails-heres-what-mac-users-need-to-know/ (YouTube Video) CIA Porn Accusation Emails: Real, Or Scams? https://youtu.be/V4GXOhBlcAg =Also Subscribe to Our Podcast= Intego Mac Podcast https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/intego-mac-podcast/id1293834627 http://podcast.intego.com for other subscription links & show notes =Sources - Audio, Video, and Image Credits= Music - "Always" by Synx https://soundcloud.com/synxelectronic/tracks https://www.toneden.io/synxelectronic/post/synx-always https://youtu.be/9ui4dvHVECA license: "You can use any track you like, just be sure to give proper credit." Intego ContentBarrier, comprehensive parental control software for Mac (Part II)

07:31
ContentBarrier is a parental control program for the Macintosh, providing functions for parents and businesses. It is designed to filter and block certain Internet content according to the settings you choose. ContentBarrier blocks adult web sites, sites with subjects not fit for children, and blocks chats when predatory language is used. It also blocks certain protocols, or types of Internet communication, that you may not want your children to use, such as peer-to-peer and other file sharing protocols, online games, streaming audio and video, FTP, SSH and more. ContentBarrier works with multiple users, and interfaces seamlessly with the Mac OS X user accounts on your computer. If you have several children, you can set different limitations corresponding to their age or maturity. You can choose whether they have access to newsgroups, e-mail, or whether they can download files. You can set the program to let them only use the Internet at certain times, and on certain days. You can choose to block or allow specific web sites, allow users only to use selected applications, and block access to specific types of content, such as streaming media or peer-to-peer file transfers. The program can even send you e-mail, automatically, when certain events occur. And you can view logs and manage some of ContentBarrier's settings over the Internet, using any web browser. ContentBarrier sets up a protective wall around your computer. Its pre-defined filters let you choose what you dont want your children to see, and you can create your own custom filters as well. Inappropriate web sites are blocked, shielding your children from content they are too young for. Additional filters block content by program type, such as chats, newsgroups and more. Intego VirusBarrier X5 10.5.3:First Antivirus to scan iPhone

01:21
Intego VirusBarrier X5 10.5.3 Scans the Apple iPhone and iPod touch for Malware Not only Macs are at risk from malware; now that users can install applications on the iPhone and iPod touch, these devices are open to attack as well. Intego, the Macintosh security specialist, today announced the release of VirusBarrier X5 10.5.3, an update to its acclaimed antivirus software that Macworld calls "the gold standard". This new version adds the ability to scan the iPhone and iPod touch for malware. VirusBarrier X5 is the only antivirus software that can eradicate malware from the iPhone and iPod touch. Now that Apple has made it possible for users to add applications to the iPhone and iPod touch, there is a risk of installing applications that can harm these devices, or take control of them. And users "jailbreaking" (unlocking) an iPhone or iPod touch can install even more applications, increasing this risk. There are a number of security vulnerabilities that make these devices susceptible to attack; exploits for these vulnerabilities can be found easily, and future exploits are certain to be discovered. VirusBarrier X5 now offers the ability to scan files and applications on the iPhone and iPod touch in search of malware or files that indicate that exploits have compromised the devices. Users connect an iPhone or iPod touch to their Mac, then choose the device and scan it with VirusBarrier X5. When scanning an iPhone or iPod touch, VirusBarrier X5 copies all the files contained on the device to the user's startup volume in order to verify their security. If any malware or infected files are found, VirusBarrier X5 alerts the user and offers to repair or delete the infected files. "With the release of the iPhone 2.0 software, and the ability to add applications, users are facing new vectors of attack," said Laurent Marteau, Intego's CEO. "It is essential that we not only protect Mac users from malware, but also protect their iPhone and iPod touch at the same time." VirusBarrier X5 10.5.3 is available now. This version is a free upgrade for all users of VirusBarrier X5, and is available for download via NetUpdate, Intego's automatic update tool.
