Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

A, An, The Konu Anlatımı #5
Reklamsız, tahtaya zoomlu, indirilebilen ve sınırlı internet hatlarında bile açılabilen Udemy kursum için indirim kuponu uygulanmış kurs linki: https://bit.ly/2uLRBWO http://www.turengkitap.com https://www.instagram.com/ozerkirazingilizce https://www.facebook.com/ingilizcekonuanlatimi Bu videoda İngilizcede a, an, the konu anlatımı yapacağım. A, an ve the nerelerde kullanılır öğrenmiş olacaksınız. A ve An bir demektir ve bir anlamına gelen one kelimesinin yerine kullanılırlar. Türkçede karşılığı bulunmayan the kelimesinin İngilizcede niçin kullanıldığını açıklamak biraz zor. Bu yüzden the konusu her zaman eksik kalır. Ancak aslına bakarsanız the yı anlamak o kadar da zor değil. The bizi İngilizcede genelleme yapmaktan kurtaran bir sözcüktür. Örneğin, He washes cars everyday cümlesi O her gün araba yıkar demektir. Bu cümleden onun muhtemelen bir oto yıkayıcısı olduğu sonucu çıkıyor çünkü belirli bir arabadan bahsedilmemiş ve genelleme yapılmış. Şimdi bu genellemeden kurtulalım: He washes the cars everyday Bu cümle O her gün arabaları yıkar anlamındadır. Bu cümleden anladığımız şey ise onun belirli bir grup arabayı her gün yıkadığı. Gördüğünüz gibi, car kelimesinin başına gelen the sözcüğü, arabaları genelden özele indirgiyor. Aynı şekilde şu örneklere bakalım: Trees are green. Bu cümle, Ağaçlar yeşildir demektir. Ağaçların başında the olmadığı için dünyadaki bütün ağaçları kastetmiş oluyoruz. Oysaki ağaçların başına the koyarak; The trees are green. deseydik, Ağaçlar yeşil demiş olurduk. Bu cümleden tüm ağaçların yeşil olmadığını; örneğin, söyleyen kişinin bahçesindeki bir grup ağacın yeşil, diğer ağaçların ise farklı bir renk olabileceğini anlıyoruz. The sözcüğü, konuşan ve dinleyenin neyin kastedildiğini bildiği durumlarda kullanılır. Güneşin başına the koyarak the sun diyoruz. Böyle herkesçe bilinen, diğer sözcüklerin başına da the koyabilirsiniz. O benim arabam. derken It is the my car. denilmez çünkü artık nesneyi niteleyen my sözcüğümüz olduğu için the ya gerek kalmaz. A ve An = Bir anlamındadır ve İngilizcede one sözcüğünün kattığı anlamı verir. A ve an sözcükleri, peşlerinden gelen kelimenin ilk harfine göre seçilir. Peki a/an ne tür durumlarda kullanılır? İngilizcede nesne çoğul halde yazılmamışsa, başında daima o nesneyi niteleyecek bir kelime olmalıdır. Your ve benzeri olabilir. A man came here yesterday. örneğinde a sözcüğünü kural gereği getirmek zorundayız. Man came here yesterday. şeklinde bir cümle kuramayız. A ve an genelleme yapmak için de kullanılır: A banana is yellow. cümlesi Muz sarıdır. demektir. Yani bu cümlede tek bir tane muzun sarı olduğunu kastetmiyoruz; tam tersine, başına belirsizlik anlamı katan bir sözcüğünü koyarak belirli bir muzu değil de tüm muzları kastetmiş oluyoruz. Aynı cümleyi Bananas are yellow. şeklinde de yazabilirdik.

Even if you are an advanced speaker of English, I'm sure you will discover one or two rules that you didn't know about. Watch the lesson, then take the quiz at http://www.engvid.com/grammar-8-rules-the/ TRANSCRIPT Hi, everyone. I'm Jade. In this lesson today, we're looking at the rules for articles, but more specifically, the rules where we have exceptions in using articles. So when I'm observing people's English, all the time I'm hearing the same mistakes with articles. So what you will learn to do in this lesson is how to avoid those really, really common mistakes I hear all the time. If you're somebody who just doesn't use articles at all because in your native language, you don't have articles, I understand it can be really, really hard to start using them. But they are an important aspect of grammar, and you should be using them. So if you watch this lesson, you'll get some tips for using articles, where you need them, and where you shouldn't use them. And also, if you're someone who's getting articles right nearly all the time, I'm quite sure that you will pick up one or two rules here that you didn't know before. So let's get started. There are eight different rules. Rule No. 1: When we're talking about countries, most countries we don't use an article. So here some sentences. "She lives in England. They live in America." We don't use articles. But if the country's considered to be a nation state, a collection of different states, or a collection of different countries in one bigger state, then we use articles. Here are examples. So "the U.S.A., the U.K., the U.A.E." -- where I spend a lot of my time -- and here are -- also, we need to mention islands. When a country is a group of islands, we always use articles. So we would say "the Virgin Islands", and we'd say "the Philippines" as well. It's interesting that we can say, "She lives in England" because England is one country, but when talking about the same -- okay, it's not exactly the same place, the U.K., because it's -- the U.K. is more than one country. It's more than just England. But sometimes people think of it as being the same place. It's not. When we're talking about the U.K., we need an article, but just for "England", it's okay not to use an article. Let's take a look at rule No. 2. Rule No. 2 -- this is a really subtle rule, here. And this one I always correct in sentences. When people talk about meals -- breakfast, lunch, dinner, also brunch is a meal you might not know. It's in between breakfast and lunch. -- we don't use articles. So here's a correct sentence. "I don't eat breakfast." I'm talking in general there. "I don't eat breakfast." That's okay to say. However, if I'm being specific, "We didn't like the dinner", it's okay to use an article here. You need to. So what does the sentence actually mean? Imagine that we were out last night, and we had a meal. And now, we're talking about it. "Well, the place was nice, but I didn't like the dinner." Being specific about that experience we had. If I'm talking in general, "I don't like dinner", that would just mean all the time, okay? So it's a very big difference in meaning. Now, we'll look at rule No. 3 for jobs. Jobs take the indefinite article. That's a grammar word. And "indefinite article" means "a". We don't use "the".

Articles: A, An & The - English grammar tutorial video lesson
Articles: a, an & the. Learn all about when to use 'a' or 'an' and when and how to use 'the.' Welcome to English Grammar Spot! This lesson is about 'a', 'an' and 'the'. Otherwise known as articles. Take a look at the following sentences The man walked right past me. A giant spider crawled across the ceiling. An elephant is a large animal. All the underlined words here are articles. First I am going to show you how and when to use 'a'. We use 'a' before a word that starts with a constant for example: B, C, D, F, G, H, J , K, L, M, N, P. Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Y, Z. For example: A blue bird. A nice man. A wonderful dinner. Hereblue, nice and wonderful all start with consonants. Now I'm going to show you how and when to use 'an'.We use 'an' before a word that starts with a vowel. And the vowels in the English language are A, E, I, O, U. For example: an apple an egg an insect. Now there are some exceptions. The use of 'a' or 'an' depends on the beginning sound so the word might start with a consonant or a vowel, but we really need to listen to how the word it is pronounced. For example: hour. We see an 'H' but we hear a vowel sound at the beginning 'our' and 'hour'. So what do we do in this case? We use the article 'an.' Because we hear a vowel sound. So we say an hour and not a hour. Another exception: the use of 'a' and 'an' depends on the beginning sound unique. We see a 'U' but we hear a consonant sound 'you'. So what to do we do we do here? a unique chance and not an unique chance. So remember, you have to listen carefully to how the word is pronounced and then you choose whether you use 'a' or 'an'. Now we need to talk about the indefinite and the definite article. We already talked about 'a' and 'an'. but we also need to talk about 'the'. 'A' and 'an' are indefinite articles. They are used to describe one or a number of things, but that also goes for 'the'. But here 'the' is the definite article and it is used to describe one or number of things So what is the difference? The indefinite article describes things in general. For instance a dog barks. Because that is what dogs do. Or a cat 'miaauws' The definite article describes specific things. For example when we say the dog barks, we have a particular dog in mind. For instance the dog of your neighbours or a dog that we see in the street. Now there is also something that we call the 'zero article'. Here we do not use an article at all whereas in other languages we might. Sometimes an article is left out. This happens when there's only one of someone or something. For example: Sally is head teacher there's only one head teacher in school and perhaps most important Elizabeth II is Queen of the United Kingdom there's only one queen in England. Sometimes 'the' is left out. When talking about seasons in general spring is in the air, not the spring is in the air but when we talk about a general season we use 'the.' I visited her in in the spring of 2012. Here I have a particular moment in mind. Again sometimes 'the' is left out, for instance when talking about meals in general. When shall we have lunch? I was very happy with the lunch she served. And again here we use 'the' because we have a specific lunch in mind. We also do not use an article when talking about church, hospital, prison , school, university in general. So 'the' is left out, only when we talk about the function of the building For instance, he went to university last year. So here we do not have a particular university in mind. Whereas: The university is well situated. This is about a particular university. For instance Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, Yale. The is left out when we talk about languages. Arabic is difficult to learn. I love learning English. I thank you for your attention for regular updates please subscribe to youtube.com/englishgrammarspot or go to www.englishgrammarspot.com.

The learner has to decide noun-by-noun which one of the articles to use. In fact, there are 4 choices to make, because sometimes no article is necessary. Native-speakers, of course, use the articles correctly without thinking. English learners, on the other hand, need to have some guidelines for making the right choice - particularly those learners whose own language does not have articles. The guidelines that follow in this lesson should help ESL students to a basic understanding of English article use. The words a, an and the are known as articles. • We use an before words that begin with vowels (a,e,i,o,u). E.g. I found an orange boat. However there are few exceptions like the words honest and hour. In the words honest and hour the alphabet h is silent and therefore the letter o becomes the first alphabet of the word and hence we use the article an. E.g. Mr. Smith is an honest man. I will be with you in an hour. We use a before words that begin with consonants (all the letters of the alphabet except the vowels). E.g. Bumble is a baby elephant. • We use the before words that we have already spoken about. E.g. I bought an apple. The apple is very sweet.

How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson
How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson English articles ("a", "an", and "the") come before nouns. They help to communicate which thing you're talking about, similar to words like "this", "my", and "all". And they're confusing to a lot of English learners. Articles are really, really hard! If your native language doesn't use articles, they can be really confusing. The truth is, you might never completely master articles. Most non-native English speakers don't, even know if they're quite fluent and have spoken English for a very long time. That's mostly OK. Mistakes with articles don't usually get in the way of communication. Your listeners or readers will usually be able to figure out what you mean by guessing whether you meant "a thing" or "the thing". So while you should try to improve your skill with articles, you shouldn't worry much about them. This video lesson by Niharika will clear your basic doubts for using articles correctly.

Articles (a, an, the) | Learn English | Canguro English
Join Sandra and I as we study articles. Don't forget to read the notes below. See you in class! ***** In English there are two types of articles; definite and indefinite. Articles precede and describe nouns. THE INDEFINITE ARTICLE First, let's look at the indefinite article. There are two; a and an. Indefinite articles are used when when the subject of the noun is not specific, or to introduce something that is not known to the listener. We do not put a/an in front of plural nouns, they can only be used in front of singular nouns. For example; He always goes to a small place. (We don't know the place) We know an old woman. (We don't know the woman) I love red shoes! (Plural noun) A or an? A is used in front of consonant sounds, and an is used in front of vowel sounds. Usually, this is easy; if the word starts with a consonant, use a, if it starts with a vowel, use an, but remember that we are talking about pronunciation, and not spelling. This is important because sometimes we pronounce consonants as vowels and vice versa. For example; A dog An ambulance A UN decision (UN is pronounced "you-en", which starts with a consonant) An SOS message (SOS is pronounced "es-oh-es" which starts with a vowel) FIXED EXPRESSIONS WITH A/AN We also use a/an in expressions such as: Half an hour Twice a year a few €2 a litre A or one? You can use a/an or one in front of singular countable nouns to mean the same thing, for example: We are going to Canada for a year We are going to Canado for one year But it's important to remember that one is a number, and that a/an are articles. So we only use one when we want to emphasise the quantity, for example; I want one orange juice (not two!!) Are you staying only one night? (not more than one!!) THE DEFINITE ARTICLE Definite articles are used when the subject of the noun has been mentioned before. For example; The woman takes a small child. I sometimes see the child. I know a place. It is the big place. Definite articles are also used when the subject of the noun is already known to the listener. For example; I never see the small part. (We already know the part) The right eyes are always different. (We already know the eyes) As you can see, definite articles can be used in front of singular and plural nouns, and before consonants and vowels. THE ZERO ARTICLE In certain specific situations in English we don't use any article (called the zero article). Usually this is when we talk about concepts, rather than specific things, for example; I love to play sport (not the sport) They are afraid of heights (not the heights) Climate can affect your mood (not the climate) There are lots of other rules about the zero article, but they will be covered in other classes.

How to Write Engaging Linkedin Articles
Unlike other social networks like Twitter and Instagram, Linkedin gives its users the ability to publish two types of posts: a short post or an article, which is the equivalent of a long form post. There are many benefits to publishing Linkedin articles and not limiting yourself to just publishing short posts. The first benefit of writing articles on Linkedin is that it establishes you as a thought leader. By publishing articles on Linkedin with your own content, relevant to your business and industry, you automatically position yourself as an expert. The second benefit of writing articles on Linkedin is that the feature is free to all Linkedin users. Unlike publishing your own blog posts where you have to use paid platforms such as Wordpress and pay for hosting and a domain name, when publishing articles on Linkedin, the service is free. The third benefit of Linkedin publishing is that it helps you grow your reach. Instead of your content being seen only by your existing Linkedin audience, anyone on Linkedin can type in a keyword in Linkedin’s search box and when they click on “content”, all the articles ranking for that keyword will appear. In order to publish an article on Linkedin, simply login to your Linkedin account, and click on “write an article”. You’ll notice that there are 3 sections. A banner, a headline and the body of the article. When using Linkedin for business, write articles that spur dialogue, nurture relationships and create interest for your business by following the steps outlined below. First, to post an article on Linkedin, perform keyword research to see what keywords or keyword phrases your audience looks for. Ideally, these keywords should have low competition and high volume searches. Ideally, for a 1,000 word article, include 5 keywords throughout your article, three times each but make sure it doesn’t sound or look obvious that you’re keyword optimizing. Your article should flow nicely. To post an article on Linkedin, the second step is writing your title. Your title should include your most important keyword and should be attention-grabbing. Once you’ve decided on your title, make sure you create a banner for it. Your banner should be 600 x 322 pixels. The third step is writing your article. Your article should include a paragraph per idea. For example, if your article is about 5 steps, you should have a paragraph per step. If your article underlines mistakes to avoid, have a paragraph for each mistake. To make your article more enjoyable to read, include stories or examples for each idea you develop in your article. The fourth step after you’ve completed your article, is to add calls to action throughout your content. If your article is 1,000 word long, include your call to action three times throughout. The final step when using Linkedin for business, is simply publishing your article. Click on the ‘publish’ tab on the top right hand side a check one more you are happy with the layout and the content. If you’re not, you can always edit your article.
