BREXIT EU's JUNCKER: 'I don't watch BBC for Brexit news, Sky News is better"

00:59
There will be an extraordinary EU leaders meeting next week if the British parliament votes down for the third time the Brexit deal negotiated by Prime Minister Theresa May, the head of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker said. “In the event the Withdrawal Agreement would not be approved by the House of Commons, we will have a second meeting of the European Council next week,” Juncker told reporters on entering an EU summit in Brussels. European Commission President Juncker revealed, before his official statement, that he prefers watching Brexit news on Sky News, rather than watching BBC... #Brexit #Jean-ClaudeJuncker #BBC

Merkel says she will 'fight until the final hour' to avoid no-deal Brexit

00:40
Angela Merkel has said she will continue fighting a no-deal Brexit until the UK's planned departure from the EU on 29 March. The German chancellor said it was up to Theresa May to tell the EU what was now required for a deal, but the 'flux' in British politics made it impossible to predict how the situation would unfold. In a move that added to exasperation in European capitals, the Commons Speaker, John Bercow, made a surprise ruling that the government could not put the same Brexit deal to another vote unless it was substantially different Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/guardianwiressub Angela Merkel will 'fight until final hour' to avoid no-deal Brexit ► https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/mar/19/eu-ministers-baffled-frustrated-brexit-chaos-bercow Support the Guardian ► https://support.theguardian.com/contribute Today in Focus podcast ► https://www.theguardian.com/news/series/todayinfocus The Guardian YouTube network: The Guardian ► http://www.youtube.com/theguardian Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► http://is.gd/guardianfootball Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► http://is.gd/guardianculture

EU ultimatum to May: you can only delay Brexit if deal is passed

19:38
Theresa May has ruled out a long extension to Brexit while she is Prime Minister. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) In angry exchanges at Prime Minister's Questions, she told MPs that they had indulged themselves on Brexit for too long and that she would never agree to a delay that meant holding European Parliamentary elections. Instead she has asked the European Council for a delay until the end of June. The European Council President Donald Tusk responded by saying he thought a short extension was possible, but only if MPs vote for the deal next week. With those two ultimatums on the table, MPs' choices in next week's vote appear to be narrowing rapidly.

Leaders arrive for crunch EU Council talks with Theresa May | Brexit LIVE

02:09:29
THERESA May is set to ask the EU for a short Brexit delay today as Brits are "fed up" with politicians' dithering more than 1,000 days after they voted OUT. In a sign that the PM is confident she can get her deal pushed through on the third time, officials said today she won't be asking for a long delay to add more wasted time to the process. A No10 official said: "PM won't be asking for a long extension. "There is a case for giving Parliament a bit more time to agree a way forward, but the people of this country have been waiting nearly three years now. "They are fed up with Parliament's failure to take a decision and the PM shares their frustration." A long extension could have been up to three YEARS - with a break clause if a deal is finally done... BREXIT EU SUMMIT: Dutch PM Mark Rutte BLASTS British MPs and says May's job is almost 'unhuman'

07:34
European leaders are meeting in Brussels with Brexit, once again, on the agenda. Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said: "I never got frustrated with Theresa May. Her tenacity is enormous but she is working in an extremely difficult situation. I try to put myself her her shoes and I’m not sure i can fill those shoes. She has to fight so many people." He said her job was "almost unhuman" adding that the UK was "better off" with Mrs May as their prime minister. Mark Rutte said things won't go automatically right, adding: "We can't allow ourselves any accidents." He also accused MPs of "playing politics" and said the "sensible" thing to do was back Mrs May's deal during a vote next week. Mr Rutte said: "Too many people have played party politics with this. My admiration for Theresa is undiminished. "Even if my patience was not wearing thin next Friday is Brexit day and we are not close to a solution." #Brexit #MarkRutte #TheresaMay

BREXIT: If PM May doesn't find solution, someone else must do it - MPs are not stupid - MEP Lamberts

02:41
Here in Brussels, where it’s now past 9.30pm, we’ve been waiting for a joint press conference from European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and EU Council President Donald Tusk, to announce the European Council’s decision on Theresa May’s request for a three-month Brexit delay. But a spokesman for Tusk has announced that the discussions will continue over dinner – without UK Prime Minister May. She addressed her fellow leaders earlier, in a 90-minute question and answer session that, owing to some sources, did not go well, as she flatly refused to say what she plans to do if her deal is rejected for a third time. There then commenced a prolonged period of horse-trading over what new exit date Britain should be offered, and on what conditions; with some leaders keen to remove the risk of an accidental no-deal Brexit next week – or the need to return to Brussels for an emergency summit – and others, including the French president Emmanuel Macron, taking a harder line. Tonight, Philippe LAMBERTS (Greens/EFA,BE), member of the European Parliament Steering group on Brexit accused Prime Minister May of running down the clock.

BREXIT CHAOS: John Bercow blocks Theresa May's third vote, Anna Soubry asks Mister Speaker's advice

03:33
John Bercow has ruled out another vote on the government's previously rejected Brexit agreement if the motion remains "substantially the same". He told the Commons that parliamentary conventions dating back to 1604 meant MPs could not be asked to vote on precisely the same subject twice. MPs rejected Theresa May's Brexit deal with the EU by 149 votes last week. Mr Bercow's ruling came as the government considers a third attempt to get the deal through Parliament. He said the second vote on the prime minister's deal last week was "in order" but any further votes must pass this "test" in order to be allowed. Bercow's intervention could have massive impact. MP Anna Soubry asked Bercow for advice. #Brexit #JohnBercow #TheresaMay

Brexit: May antagonizes UK Parliament with public address | DW News

10:20
Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel has confirmed that the EU could approve Britain's request for a short extension to Brexit. Merkel told German lawmakers that the EU could back a delay if British lawmakers passed the British prime minister's withdrawal deal in a vote next week. This despite the fact that it has already been rejected twice. Chancellor Merkel's comments were part of a policy speech to the German parliament ahead of an EU summit that starts today in Brussels. She began her speech by saying she favored a delay if it meant an orderly Brexit that was able to resolve the issues surrounding the Irish border. Meanwhile British prime minister Theresa May used a national TV address to give her fellow parliamentarians a good telling off. BREXIT - WATCH Jeremy Corbyn calling Prime Minister May "STUPID WOMAN"

22:19
00:34 Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn has become embroiled in a sexism row after he appeared to call Theresa May a “stupid woman” following a fiery exchange at Prime Minister's Questions. Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn was accused of being a sexist and a misogynist today after appearing to call Theresa May a "stupid woman". The Labour boss was attacked by both Tory and Labour MPs after losing his rag with the PM during PMQs. Mrs May joked at the end of the pair's exchange today: "I've got some advice for the Right Honourable Gentleman - look behind you! "They are not impressed and neither is the country!" Mr Corbyn then shook his head and muttered "stupid woman" under his breath, as a lip-reader confirmed. Health Secretary Matt Hancock said at his outburst: "The mask slips. Jeremy Corbyn's abuse of the Prime Minister shows what a reactionary misogynist he is." And Labour's Jess Phillips said it was "sexist" and he "should apologise". Furious MPs raised the matter with the Commons Speaker just minutes later. Patrick McLoughlin fumed: "Would it not be appropriate for him to come back in the Chamber and apologise?" Politicians shouted "disgrace!" and "shame!", and Tory CCHQ boss Brandon Lewis demanded he apologise. He said: "Looks shocking on the film, unacceptable in any environment." Deaf drummer Evelyn Glennie told the BBC she was very certain he had said what was claimed. But Jeremy Corbyn's spokesman insisted this afternoon he WOULDN'T say sorry, saying he'd not said that.

Third Brexit deal vote could be held day before Brexit - as PM asks EU for delay

12:08
The Prime Minister is writing to the EU to formally ask for Brexit to be postponed until June 30th or longer. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) The Chief Brexit Negotiator Michel Barnier told Theresa May that when she comes to Brussels on Thursday, she must explain what sort of Brexit extension she wants - and why. But that's not going to be an easy task for Mrs May, with her cabinet divided over whether a long extension is acceptable, and parliament gridlocked after the Speaker warned that he might not allow a further vote on Brexit without substantial changes. ------- Watch more of our explainer series here - https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list... BERCOW'S BREXIT BOMBSHELL: Mister Speaker BLOCKS Theresa May's third vote (full statement)

10:04
House of Commons Speaker John Bercow was today accused of sabotaging Theresa May's Brexit deal after telling MPs she cannot force them to vote on it again without changing it 'substantially'. The Commons Speaker cited a 400-year-old Commons precedent to inflict an extraordinary blow to Mrs May's hopes of getting her EU divorce through Parliament. Mrs May had planned to go to Brussels on Thursday and apply for a 'long' Brexit delay unless MPs show they are ready to back her deal by Tuesday night. Now Mr Bercow used a precedent from April 1604 - used 12 times in the Commons since then - to warn the PM that she must significantly change her deal if she wants to force another vote on it before March 29. It means that if Mrs May wants to force MPs into another vote after the EU Brussels summit she will have to ask Mr Bercow who would have the final say on if it goes ahead. Unless Mrs May can make an acceptable change, the Speaker's intervention means the PM's deal will be killed off with No Deal or a long-term delay to Brexit the most likely options. This video has Speaker Bercow's full statement. #Brexit #JohnBercow #ThirdVote

BREXIT: 'I never felt more ashamed to be a Tory, PM May is ZIG-ZAGGING all over the place’ - Grieve

10:09
During the "Emergency Brexit debate", Conservative MP Dominic Grieve says Theresa May is "zig-zagging all over the place, rather than acting in the national interest". "I have never felt more ashamed to be part of the Conservative Party," he says. He adds that if there is a third vote on whether to approve the PM's deal next week, then he believes it will be rejected again. "The government's credibility is running out," he concludes. #Brexit #DominicGrieve #WithdrawalAgreement

BREXIT: Speaker Bercow blocks PM May's deal & strategy: "Deal MUST change or I’ll BLOCK 3rd vote"

01:33
House of Commons speaker John Bercow threatens to block a third vote on Prime Minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal unless she change it. The speaker of the House of Commons said MPs have expressed concerns about being asked to vote on Mrs May’s controversial deal more than once. He said unless her deal is revised, he will prevent the third meaningful vote on it. He said: “It has been strongly rumoured that third and even possibly fourth meaningful vote motions will be attempted. Hence this statement is designed to signal what would be orderly and what would not. “If the Government wishes to bring forward a new proposition that is neither the same nor substantially the same as that disposed of by the House on March 12 this would be entirely in order. “What the Government cannot do is resubmit the same proposition or substantially the same proposition of that of last week that was rejected by 149 votes. “This should not be thought of as my last word on the matter. It is the test the Government must meet for a vote to be legitimately by held.” #Brexit #JohnBercow #TheresaMay
