Start Mining Dogecoin With Your Mac's GPU In Under 4 Minutes

31 ratings | 9007 views
**UPDATE** To check the current exchange rate of Dogecoin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xsAqapD8AfI A short video tutorial on how to start mining DOGECOIN with the GPU of your MAC computer in under 4 minutes. Step 1: Register an account at http://doge.poolerino.com/ Create a new worker. Step 2: Download CGMiner 3.7.2 at http://spaceman.ca/cgminer/ Unzip this in your Downloads folder Step 3: Open the 'Terminal' Application (Applications - Utilities - Terminal). Run the following commands: cd Downloads cd cgminer-3.7.2-mac-slim ./cgminer --scrypt -o stratum+tcp://doge.poolerino.de:3333 -u USERNAME.WORKER_NAME -p WORKER_PASS -I 8 -w 64 Where USERNAME, WORKER_NAME, and WORKER_PASS are replaced by your Poolerino username, worker name, and worker password, respectively. Scale up the -I value until your computer starts crashing. **Note** This blog has a great description of what the -I and -w parameters do, and how to change them to improve performance: http://blog.nwoolls.com/2013/05/02/litecoin-mining-on-mac-os-x-gpu-mining/ **Note 2** If you get a "no device found" error, it most likely means your GPU does not support scrypt mining :(

Hey I got it to work but I've set the intensity -i8 and -w64 the same as you but my mac starts to lag a lot how can I fix this
LyinCakeGamingMike (10 months ago)
It does this because its mining. Did you really think you could do this and still use your mac?

Please do not use this for mining on a laptop! YOU WILL KILL YOUR LAPTOP!

thank you so much I've been on this thing for hours trying to get it to work!

Hi, Thanks for sharing this. But I do everything followed your instruction, but it returns ./cgminer: --scrypt: unrecognized option
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Are you sure you downloaded the correct version of cgminer? In later versions of cgminer (beyond 3.7.2), the scrypt tag is no longer an option
Jessie Pelayo (4 years ago)
I do everything exactly. I press enter and all that happens is it says Started cgminer 3.7.2. It just stays saying that. It doesn't show anything else. Whats wrong?!? I really need help with this. I've looked everywhere to fix this but I've found nothing. If anyone can help me with this, thank you in advance!
Jesse Malnik (3 years ago)
+Jessie Pelayo  If you just wait a few minutes it will change. It happened to me too XD
jomobro (4 years ago)
Weirdly, at -I 8 I get about 20Kh/s but at -I 4 I somehow manage 19Mh/s (with no overheating)
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Doesn't sound right. Are you sure you added the "--scrypt" tag when you ran at -I 4?
killerpigz5 (4 years ago)
sorry it docent work my friend told me i tried he mines docent work but other vid works
Joey LoSacco (4 years ago)
how many coins do you think this will get you in like an hour. Trying to figure out if this is worth stressing my mac. Its a early 2012 15inch i5
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
What's your hashrate? Plug in your hashrate at http://www.coinwarz.com/cryptocurrency to determine how many coins you can mine.
Brenden Schaeffer (4 years ago)
I did this and it is saying no network detected it is not working
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Can you copy and paste the output that you are seeing? This generally occurs when either a) the mining machine is not connected to the internet (which I am assuming is not the case, because you were able to post that comment) or b) the mining pool is down. In the latter case, you may want to try a different pool, like https://doge.hashfaster.com/

what is this??  Unexpected extra commandline arguments
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Can you copy and paste exactly what you are putting into terminal? This generally corresponds with a typo of some sort!
killerpigz5 (4 years ago)
and anyone who doesn't get that it works i swear this works

omg thank u i tried so many different things u rock and earn a like and a subscription thx u so much
Jordan Spalding (4 years ago)
It says started: " [2014-03-08 23:49:29] Started cgminer 3.7.2" but then it goes to white and terminal resets to where it was. No error message or anything
DaileyWithBailey (4 years ago)
-bash: ./cgminer--scrypt: No such file or directory So I am getting this^ but I am hitting enter at all the right times I believe so I don't know what to do.
DaileyWithBailey (4 years ago)
+ShortTutorials Sweet that seemed to boot it up. Although its just sitting there saying {Started cgminer 3.7.2}
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Based on your commend, looks like you need to put a space between './cgminer' and '--scrypt'!

Hey man i hope im not bothering you, but i do exactly as you say. i did your other video tutorial with minerd and it worked fine. i used cgminer and i get this no gpu detected from it. im using a mac mini
Jake Flaherty (4 years ago)
thanks means a lot!
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Looks like that card doesn't support OpenCL, and therefore you won't be able to use it for scrypt mining. Check this thread for more details: http://www.asteroidapp.com/forums/discussion/129/no-devices-enabled-waiting-/p1

Bryan Butler (4 years ago)
hey so when mining using my CPU my macbook pro stays pretty quiet and cool. Then i started mining with my gpu with the same intensity as you(8) and my macbook got really loud and pretty warm so much so that i shut down the terminal running it cause it kinda scared me.  Is this normal or did i just narrowly escape having my macbook implode on itself?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
+Bryan Butler That is correct. Regarding intensity, it really depends on your hardware. I show 8 on this video because 8 is the lowest option, and most macs have relatively weak GPUs. Try working your way up from 8 until you either a) crash the computer, b) stop seeing an increase in khash/s or c) reach an unstable temperature.
Bryan Butler (4 years ago)
Thanks! So what I gathered from what you said is noise ok heat is bad. Am I right? And is the 8 intensity still good for a macbook pro?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
You don't want to push your hardware passed its limits, as this can dramatically reduce it's lifetime. The noise you hear is your computer's fans - if you want to push your computer to it's max capabilities, you should expect some loud fans. However, what you really need to worry about is the CPU/GPUs temperatures. Try downloading "SmcFanControl" or another such program that allows you to monitor this. Anything much over ~75C (opinions on this very, some people are willing to go up to 85C, I personally keep my hardware around 60C), and you may be putting your machine at risk.
Riccardo (4 years ago)
after i press the last time enter on terminal a message tells me i have no gpu usable what that means? How can i fix that? haaalp pls :D

I tried to mine with cg and the program run but on the last screen like urs continue appear "Stratum from pool 0 detected new block" from 12pm to 13 pm continue to appear this. on hashfaster.com you know why?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
That is good! Every time your 'stratum' detects a new block, it means your pool has successfully mined dogecoin.
lightbobproductions (4 years ago)
I got the terminal screen at the end, but an error has appeared.  [2014-02-16 01:31:15] Error -11: Building Program (clBuildProgram) <program source>:678:10:{678:10-678:20}: error: no match ng overload found for arguments of type 'unsigned int  __attribute__((ext_vecto _type(4))), unsigned int'                  B[i] = EndianSwap(tmp[i]);                         ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Do you have any suggestions ?

Check out this link:  http://www.asteroidapp.com/forums/discussion/89/cgminer-for-mac-os-x-3-7-2-released/p1 "jmmpurplesky" solved a similar problem by adding "-k diablo" to the command, and switching pools. Let me know if that helps!

What type of video card do you have? Check "About This Mac" > "More Info" > "Graphics". I suspect you have an older mac (2009-2011?) with a Nvidia graphics card. In this case, you should look into using CudaMiner instead of cgminer!
Max Oldshein (4 years ago)
Is possible to mine with both your CPU and GPU at the same time? And how long should it take for your worker to become active on the poolerino website? Also how do you know how many doge coins you've mined? Where does it say this on the website?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
a) Yes it is possible, just open two terminal windows, and go through the steps of mining with your GPU in one, and mining with your CPU in the other! b) Usually takes 20-30 minutes and c) scroll to the bottom of the "dashboard" page, and check out the "Account Information" section. There will be a number of confirmed coins and unconfirmed coins. These two together are how many coins you have!
Scotch (4 years ago)
what's the difference of this tutorial and the first one?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
This will tutorial will mine with your Graphics card. The last tutorial mines only with your machine's CPU!
Egg_Man (4 years ago)
i keep getting this on my mac book air  [2014-02-03 01:22:09] Unexpected extra commandline arguments                     Segmentation fault: 11
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Which version of cgminer did you download? Are you sure that you downloaded cgminer 3.7.2? The most recent version of cgminer does not support Scrypt mining, so adding the --scrypt option will cause this error.
ILOVEMUSIC Gallardo (4 years ago)
Hey, How many KH/s would be good to have on youre imac. Like i dont want to waste my time if i dont get much dogecoins......
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
16kh/s on a Mac CPU would be a good result. The recent higher end laptops have great GPU's as well, which could add around 70-80 khash/s. This might get you up to around 100 khash/s, which is a solid rate, but it won't make you rich anytime soon. This in mind, if you are looking to get coins quickly, buying is probably the best option!
Max Hoppe (4 years ago)
Im not getting the terminal screen you got in the very end, I got the program running I think, but Im not getting that last screen (or interface I guess you could call it) and it says my worker is inactive, am I missing something?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Are you sure you a) created the worker properly or b) correctly typed your username, workername, and worker password? Admittedly obvious suggestions, but in my experience an inactive worker is generally the result of a typo!
Justin Wu (4 years ago)
don't you need to put the password for the user in terminal, or no?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
The password for the pool user? Nope!
kjkkkj (4 years ago)
Getting "Unexpected extra commandline arguments", although I did and typed exactly what you said in the video. I checked it over and over again. What's the problem?
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Care to copy paste exactly what you have typed in?
Mark Cormican (4 years ago)
does it stop the operation when you quit terminal
Mark Cormican (4 years ago)
thanks
ShortTutorials (4 years ago)
Yes. There are ways to set it up running in the background though - notably using the "nohup" utility.
