aimanno everyday English (11 months ago)
English with Max Thousand thanks for you I always learn from you. (Pls always for ever correct).
English with Max (11 months ago)
In any case, when we use "I'm afraid" to mean "regret" it's basically always to talk about things in the present or future. E.g. I'm afraid I can't help you at the moment. I'm afraid I can't come to your party this weekend. (Sorry if you already know that.)
English with Max (11 months ago)
You're welcome! You regretted getting married? :(

I'm afraid I didin't understand "watching Paint Dry", Could you please give more examples?!
Ulghart (11 months ago)
Justst think how boring can be to stare at a wall recently painted and wait until it dryes....
English with Max (1 year ago)
If something is really boring, you can say: "It was like watching paint dry." E.g. "The movie was so boring, it was like watching paint dry." Or if someone mentions an activity that sounds very boring to you, you can use it. E.g. "Would you like to go watch the cricket match?" Answer: "I'd prefer to watch paint dry." Does that make sense?

I'm afraid of don't speak English.
JPdynabook (1 year ago)
"I'm afraid of not being able to speak English." People who say this can actually speak English.
English with Max (1 year ago)
Exactly. Or the first one could mean: "I'm afraid of not being able to speak English." It's probably not the most common way to express the idea, but it's still correct.
JPdynabook (1 year ago)
"I'm afraid of not speaking English." The speaker can't live a day without speaking English, maybe. "I'm not afraid of speaking English." The speaker's English might be great, so he speaks English with confidence. Correct?
English with Max (1 year ago)
Both are correct, but they mean different things.
JPdynabook (1 year ago)
Wouldn't the correct form be "I'm not afraid of speaking English"?
Marzio Quaglino (1 year ago)
Hi Max I write from Italy. Thanks a lot for your English lessons. I'm afraid but I need a little explanation. I'm afraid of something (of spider, of frogs, and so on). But what about with verbs? I'm afraid TO do something (I'm afraid to drive fast) or I'm afraid OF doing something (I'm afraid of driving fast)? Thaks again
English with Max (1 year ago)
Hi Marzio! Thanks for your comment. That's a very good question. You can actually say either! i.e. to be afraid to do something OR to be afraid of doing something
