665 ratings | 13942 views
Here are 10 English words that non-native speakers, and even some native speakers, often find very difficult to pronounce. To compile this list I asked my followers on Facebook and Instagram which words they found the most difficult to say in English. These words include: hierarchical, clothes and miscellaneous. I show you how to pronounce them, and also tell you how you can "cheat" if you find them too hard to say. English subtitles are available! Spread the love! Help those people whose English isn't as strong as yours and add subtitles in your language: https://www.youtube.com/timedtext_video?ref=player&v=pvMsGkn15_c For more English lessons, visit my channel, English with Max. All of the videos are free. These include free English vocabulary videos, English grammar videos, English pronunciation videos, English tips, and English listening practice. A word that I always get a a "what?" after saying is rare and rarely, such a pain in the neck to say.
English with Max (3 months ago)
I think lots of non-natives find those ones tricky. It might be easier if you use the British pronunciation: https://www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/rare?q=rare

COMFORTABLE and LITERATURE are basically tongue twisters I just can't pronounce them correctly
English with Max (8 months ago)
They are tough ones. If you pronounce the Ts like a CH in "literature" (something like "LICHRACHA") you might find it easier! You won't see that in dictionaries, but it's how lots of people pronounce it ;).

Hi Max l love you I would like to ask you what is the difference between learned and learnt it is so confused Thanks a lot!
English with Max (10 months ago)
Hi! They're both simple past forms and past participles of "learn". In other words, they mean exactly the same thing. "Learnt" is more common in the UK than in the US. Note: "learned" can also be an adjective meaning "very knowledgeable", but we don't use "learnt" in that way. I hope that helps!

Yes, you're right! I just don't normally mention the New Zealand accent because most of my viewers wouldn't know it 😉. Most people know British accents.
tony cha (1 year ago)
You are gorgeous !
Tuba chnzai (1 year ago)
You said "good news is that there's a way to cheat those words". What does cheat mean here?
English with Max (1 year ago)
It's because you're not pronouncing it exactly how it should be pronounced, but when people hear it, they will probably think you are saying it correctly. Does that make sense?
Mick Calafiore (1 year ago)
The English word I struggle with is “feminine” I also end up saying fennermen 😂😂

English with Max (1 year ago)
I'm glad it helped! No, I think Frank is fine, but lots of koalas have chlamydia... I read about it, and normally it's only a problem for the koala if it becomes stressed (losing its habitat, fire, etc.). With corrections: Hmmm... I thought koalas got yeast infections. Are you sure they're not yeast infections? lmao😂😂😁😅😅 Anyway...very helpful video, miss. Please do more about different pronunciations.😊 Ooh...and pls do correct what I wrote above.

English with Max (1 year ago)
I'm happy you like them :D
Carlos Augusto (1 year ago)
Hi Max. An important question. Are people in your country as beautiful as you are?......No...wait. Aaahh, The main question is, What type of English do you recommend that I learn to speak first, American, Australian or British?. All of them have different pronunciations. P..S. You can answer the first question if you like...........pleeeeaaaaassseeee!. Greetings!
English with Max (1 year ago)
Haha, thank you for your compliments. It would depend what you need English for and whom you're mainly going to be communicating with. If it's mainly Americans, then I would choose the American accent. In some ways it's also easier. But if you live/travel in Europe, the British option might be better. Another factor is preference - which one do you like the most? In any case, as long as you don't learn a strong regional accent, native speakers will understand you no matter which one you choose!
EmeritusE (1 year ago)
It's interesting. I've been watching your videos for some time and one of the aspects about them that I've found most intriguing is when you do British pronunciations versus American pronunciations. Often times, after your American pronunciations, I end up saying the same word out loud to myself in a comparison of accuracy. And as an American, I have to say that your emulation of the accent is perfectly precise. A precision worthy of some accolade, at least! Great job!! =) Have a very Merry Christmas and an most exceptional new year!
English with Max (1 year ago)
It's lovely to hear that from an American! Thank you very much. When I watch the film back after recording I often feel I've exaggerated it... But I suppose I'm not auditioning for a movie! Thanks very much - a very Merry Christmas to you too and thank you for your ongoing support!
Barbara Witkowska (1 year ago)

caredas (1 year ago)
You are pronouncing the word in two manners: syllables, then normal speed. Which is very good. May I suggest you introduce a third, intermediate speed, between?
English with Max (1 year ago)
I'll keep that in mind for future videos!
Tikus241 (1 year ago)
Nice group of words, Max. I still struggle with some of them.
English with Max (1 year ago)
Keep practising ;).
Ulghart (1 year ago)
Loved it !. While preparing the IELTS test I find more and more evidences that pronunciation is actually the most difficult part ! Since I speak spanish, (vowels never change the sound) I find difficult the arbitrary variation of the vowel sounds, and the lack of "clear" rules. Spanish is more direct in that matter, what you see written is what you pronounce. In English, what you see written you first check it in wordreference, thefreedictinary, and some youtube videos; then practice it fifty time and when it comes to use it you probably forgot all the practice and pronounce it wrong !!
English with Max (1 year ago)
Thanks very much! I know... English is tricky! It don't envy people learning English pronunciation.
Tommy Santos (1 year ago)
