Dont governments have the right to censor content? Like what about child protection? ... can’t they get rid of child pornography for the sake of the child once the criminal is caught?

Guys, an update from 2019, Brian Sullivan's photo still is the top result when searching "naked bike squirrel"
Rachit Acharya (1 month ago)
If that is your most embarassing photo Mr Oliver than you are a very lucky person
TheAaron2442 (1 month ago)
Laws like that could help women who have photos of themselves uploaded w/out their consent, and people who unknowingly became memes may benefit from this?

Apart from the joke, the card catalog metafor is actually very accurate.

2019 and the picture is still one of the first coming up if you search for Brian Sullivan, awesome job.

I’ve been watching John Oliver for a year now, but I just realized he has dimples. - not the cutest ones, but cool.

That photo he used at the end isn't even that embarrassing, just severely emasculating.
Evan McArthur (3 months ago)
I would be so proud of a video or a photo of me running over a squirrel on a bike, a unicycle, a segway, whatever. I'd be like, "Yes, I killed a fucking RODENT. You don't have to thank me. Fuck rodents."

this episode is a sort of "sad answer" to the episode about that woman whose naked pictues were uploaded by her ex without her consent.

Rory Lumley (6 months ago)
If shep smith robed all the banks in the world then the money will be useless due to simple economics.
PKM101 (6 months ago)
I have to disagree here. Of course, the images etc will still circulate the internet, but their exposure to random people will extremely limited, and that's the point.
Krenon (6 months ago)
i come from the future: In 2018 the same law is going to be applies again and people think its awsome again for 1 week,

Those who would try to scrub the internet should take heed: the Streisand effect is real, and it's power is inescapable.

The most embarrassing photo I've ever uploaded is one I sent to a girl about twelve years ago over msn messenger. To this day I have no idea if she still has it or if she's ever shared it with anyone.

Freaking child pornographers!!! I should be suing a convicted pedophile who is under police protection (because he is an informant) and I can do nothing! He illegally avoided his imprisonment and now he is free in Germany serving the police and attacking children and working in religious places! Please, if you do know a good hearted lawyer or a criminologist, then help me to expose him. He was sentenced to four years of security prison for attacking two 12-years old pupils under his care in a boarding school.
Amelia the Filthy Casual (8 months ago)
Yeah... I did a stint of "cam-girling" and I'm relatively certain that there's definitely still photo and video evidence of that out there, so John Oliver, I think we're even.

That brian sullivan picture is like 10th in a search of his name 😂
Declan Hargrove (9 months ago)
It genuinely makes me sad that Shep Smith wants to be forgotten because I guarantee you he’s talking about being outed. As a liberal, millennial queer.....I feel for somebody stuck HARD in a conservative, picturesque Herero lifestyle who is secretly gay. I can’t imagine how desperately he just wants everybody to see him as the same person he’s always been....and like having a family and everything?? As a fucking Fox News anchor??? Fuck. I wish him well.....let it be known, he’s one of the only rational people on the entire network. I’m sure he’s there for strategic reasons on the part of the network but still........I feel for the dude. And I salute him. I’m gonna go drink more gin now ✌🏻 thanks for coming to my ted talk

Ok in America once you do your tine you should be able to move on. So I like this ruling.
Drake Koefoed (9 months ago)
you make news, it stays in the newspaper morgue. You can look up a politician's history. The minor indiscretions might show you something about him you have a right to know

Funny see this video published at 19 may of 2014 , when actual law came to be now at 25th may of 2018

Even in the age of the Internet, History can still be written by the victors. If you put enough counter information out there, you can effectively scrub the truth away.

Im 54 and that card catalog example made perfect sense. I had a sheriff say shit about me and never met me....I think I would like to use this. PS..this sherrif has sexy pics with other men is all over the internet...yes he is gay but still inappropriate and no longer a sheriff in az.

Izaya Orihara (10 months ago)
Honestly I think that picture of you looks cute though (not sexy obviously but not ugly either.... like at all.... which is in and of itself kinda weird considering what it typically should have been viewed as *look of confused self reflection*

YELP, here we come... "A businessman has won his legal action to remove search results about a criminal conviction in a landmark “right to be forgotten” case that could have wide-ranging repercussions. The ruling was made by Mr Justice Warby in London on Friday. The judge rejected a similar claim brought by a second businessman who was jailed for a more serious offence." "In 2014 the European court of justice (ECJ) ruled that “irrelevant” and outdated data should be erased on request." https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/apr/13/google-loses-right-to-be-forgotten-case

A John Oliver video with less than 1k likes? Where am I? Heaven?
nromk (11 months ago)
question here: does a child pornographer not have human rights? I mean it's not like his convictions are gone, you just can't find them online which might help if he's trying to get help, a live, and be free--also the man with debt didn't put his debt online, it was a newspaper and he was trying to buy a house.
Bradd Brandes (11 months ago)
I want that song. I need that song. I have the right to listen to that song.

Unless everybody turns into fucking Dory from Finding Nemo, people forgetting you isn't going to make robbing the bank any easier.
SpookyRoseV (10 months ago)
In my case while most of whatever pops up is just embarrassing things I did when I was 12 (violating basic online safety you learn in schools) some internet trolls found my autism diagnosis and sent really hateful messages to my mom. And by the way; why the hell can you just find a random stranger’s medical diagnosis through Google in the first place?!
SpookyRoseV (10 months ago)
Update: last time I googled myself all of that was taken while and the only thing on Google connecting to me are indirect Facebook links. And all without using this
Nathan Rachamier (11 months ago)
are there tv screens to show those pictures to the audience?
Konig Corvus (11 months ago)
Self deprecation is a forgotten art. Except with John Oliver, a master.
Shrey Shah (11 months ago)
His point about ineffectiveness of "right to be forgotten" is wrong. The one guy who started it all may have become famous, but other such requests will be executed silently, as comedians/newscasters will lose interest in it.
Michael Panggabean (11 months ago)
Shrey Shah why would you think that way? If the case brought up, any newscaster can pick up the news and bring it up. Why would journalist stop doing that?
PixelTheDragon (11 months ago)

Thomas Labat (1 year ago)
So, it's funny and all, but I don't get it : Is John Oliver against protection of your privacy ? I thought he was as progressive as you can get. I'm very confused.
Ella Rose (16 days ago)
Thomas Labat nah he’s saying that if we don’t be careful the system won’t protect privacy at all. It could harbour criminals in a crusade to violate the privacy of others... but i agree in that for innocent ppl there definitely needs to be a mechanism. Imagine having ur rape filmed and sold on the internet... happens to lots of ppl and lots of ppl would love the opportunity to be forgotten. It’s sheer human decency
crumbite (1 year ago)
EU that isn't how the internet works, everything spreads faster if you try to hide it
Joost (1 year ago)
You can't just undo everything. There are rules to what can be removed. You can't just make google erase your crimes since there are strict rules to it. I myself used it once because for some reason a site (that already was down at that time) had my name and adress linked with my twitter profile. While the site was down, you could still that data in the search results so i got it removed. You should get it right before you ridicule it.
Brandon Davidson (1 year ago)
Well, it's the 5th search result in Google Images: https://www.google.com/search?q=brian+sullivan&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS740US740&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiymK2L_snZAhUCS60KHecaAUkQ_AUICigB&biw=1536&bih=734

A funny video, as always. You're missing the essence of the right to be forgotten, though. For future videos, you may check out the Judgment of the court (http://curia.europa.eu/juris/document/document.jsf?text=&docid=152065&pageIndex=0&doclang=en&mode=lst&dir=&occ=first&part=1&cid=307761) or Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 27 April 2016 on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data, and repealing Directive 95/46/EC (General Data Protection Regulation) (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/EN/TXT/?uri=CELEX:32016R0679). The right to be forgotten is the subject of many discussions in Europe now. Enough papers on the topic have been published, as well.
Kari Trashe (1 year ago)
People tend to forget. If the article is not on the search is gone from the collective awareness. Our oral tradition continuum is interrupted every six second by flashy superficial stories.
