That child crying and being angry at his mother should be the number one campaign issue for 2020. Show that video of what Trump imposed into law along with others that signed onto it along with pictures of ICE people and lastly show pictures of Trump smiling, making goofy faces and small video footage of him bragging about this incredible decision. I'm sure this would totally destroy Trump from ever securing a second term in office.
Ron Gonza (18 hours ago)
It should be the #1 issue, it will galvanize all Americans to focus on immigration enforcement, including left of center Democrats.

Awareness!?!? LOL! How about how this show and others like it continuously and conveniently make you unaware that *there never is and there never was a "law"* telling the Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), or even the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS); that after catching and detaining illegal alien parents with children, to then separate these children from their parents. There isn't even a blanket policy or procedure either. WTF OVER!?!? The FACT of the matter is, is that these agencies do have a responsibility to *protect minors who are in their custody.* This means that the Border Patrol, CBP, ICE, and even DHS will only separate adults and minors under *certain circumstances.* These circumstances include: 1) When the agency is unable to determine the familial relationship 2) When the agency determines that a child may be at risk with the parent or legal guardian, or 3) When the parent or legal guardian is referred for criminal prosecution. Familial Relationship – If there is reason to question the claimed familial relationship between an adult and child, it is not appropriate to detain adults and children together. Human Trafficking and Smuggling – If there is reason to suspect the purported parent or legal guardian of human trafficking or smuggling, the agency detains the adult in an appropriate, secure detection facility, separate from the minor. The agency continues to see instances and intelligence reports indicating minors are trafficked by unrelated adults, posing as a “family” in an effort to avoid detention. Safety Risk – If there is reason to suspect the purported parent or legal guardian poses a safety risk to the child (e.g. suspected child abuse), it is not appropriate to maintain the adult and child together. Criminal Prosecution – If an adult is referred for criminal prosecution, the adult will be transferred to U.S. Marshals Service custody and any children will be classified as an unaccompanied alien child and transferred to the Department of Health and Human Services custody.

Mr Oliver is a total hypocritical MORON. NOBODY SAID WORD ONE when this separation became US LAW and Policy under Obama. Years of ""family Separation"" Lets say what it is. THE PARENTS of these people putting their children in danger by traffickers and such is the TRUE genesis of them putting their OWN children in peril. THe children once they get here are OUT OF DANGER. OBAMA is responsible for the policy NOT TRUMP. As soon as a woman get raped and murdered by UN VETTED unscreened illegal immigrants. THere have been a couple multiple murders RECENTLY by ILLEGALS that were deported MULTIPLE times.

Florida with the flooding, California with the fires, places where hard winters or frequent tornadoes occur, etc. I always asked myself why people would chose to remain in places that were obviously dangerous. Growing up I began to realize, without school as a luxury to take my community for granted, that, although nothing can really keep me where I am, for the most part, I had developed strong relationships which in full retrospect make my birthplace a natural center of value to me. Hardly can I imagine living elsewhere, or in the very least not to return. Uprooting personal connections and even a number of material possessions, even to someplace in-tact, is quite unnerving. The community that took part to raise me is not something I can simply find in better forms elsewhere, but can find only in different forms. To notice this difficulty, I think, is an achievement over my youth where my old disposition about relocation erred on whimsy and that those incapable of leaving their homes seemed to me as either thoughtlessly arrogant or amidst verging insanity. These people who do not leave their homes in harsh conditions are committed for the commonality of their environment which fosters who they are. If not ideal, this is very natural. The basic instinct is to be and to stay in contact with what is around you if it serves you well enough. Even better if it feeds you. What condition would your community have to reach - joking aside, for some - that your life did not feel safe to remain? What, then, is the, perhaps, unimaginable and grotesque conditions that must be present in the life of one who does not find themselves, in spite of all ties, capable of remaining in the place that they were born? What do I know about a stranglehold-strife that encourages one's own body to flee on two legs, day and night, in some desperate march for the hope that any human they turn to will not simply curse them away, or worse? Not only is it absurd that I should fear the person who flees their home (all I need really do is to look in their eyes), but I, to the contrary, ought to take extra pains to approach them, knowing the condition they are in. By what means might I best comfort the distressed man, woman, child, whose life has become an entire catastrophe that they did not request? How do I not welcome their timid plea?--people who not only left most of their home to a place they fear to return, but people who are in a place entirely foreign to what they know. Here they are, before us, trembling, and with a mere request for decency. I ought to imagine that we are the people we claim to be, and if it is not on our shoulders to carry the weight of good will to all men, then, well, do we elect someone whose shoulders should bear it for us? That is to suggest, of course, that we intend to make any claim of good will at all, to which I reply that it is not to any secret advantage the wise man speaks of treating others pleasantly. To be in supply of wealth is to be a actor of well-meant deeds. Loneliness is not a condition suited for good health. Even to be surrounded by people is not to be social; no particular benefit to one's health is certain if, in that company, one cannot be cordial. If wealth is seen to serve only the spaces which we possess already in over-abundance, then it is in that space we cage ourselves. We will cohabitate with one another, but not on good terms, as none can look well another in the eye with genuine pride. We, with immigrants, so happen to share a continent - we all so happen to share an earth - and that is why they have come. I do so hope that the day you are in need of help, you think well and true of the people that came to you for help, and if you sleep beautifully on that night of thinking, then I think I should know why.

Immigration can be a very sensitive issue no doubt, which is why there should be thorough checks and balances in the system, which is why the asylum hearings are set in place. No one is saying to blindly and freely let anyone in - heck that can be very disastrous too - but separating children is literally the farthest thing from the answer. You can let the children be with their parents while their parents are kept where they are till they get their hearing proceedings completed with. If anything that would cost the system a lot less in terms of time invested for accountability as well as money. Heck it would be such a linear solution to all this. I can understand why many people have issues with open immigration. Look at Europe. It was a great humanitarian move, but the problem there was that there were no thorough checks and balances. Countless individuals lied about their age saying they were orphans and got in the continent who turned out to be criminals. 4 million people got asylum freely in Europe and if even 0.001% are criminals that's 4,000 criminals in Europe, which is HUGE! Which is why European leaders are being encouraged to control their borders more, that and to AVOID ELECTING ANOTHER TRUMP! But USA isn't Europe, they have systems in place that can mitigate this. But no, let's separate children for the heck of it because we as a species have reached such a low depth of morality and such a high resistance/acceptance to inhumane acts that it's become second nature to us. It sits in our subconscious. I hate to say this, but I legitimately feel many of those kids might or might've been funnelled into different abhorrent forms of trade that we read about. It's scary what "the greatest country in the world" is turning out to be, especially since USA is considered the leaders of the free world. Sometimes, just sometimes, I wonder what the world would be like if USA hadn't become the super power it is now. Maybe better, maybe worse. All I know is, that we are currently moving towards the latter

Yes, John.. this whole story is a big "WOMP-WOMP" for anyone with iq over 110. Maybe next time, when those mothers are performing a crime, they wont bring their children with down-syndrome? I mean the lvl of retardation, with which you people are looking on illegal immigrants, are just astounding. Edit: "illegal immigrants do less crime then people born in this country" oh ya don't say? Well, since you nudge that subject.. would you mind crunching those numbers per race and per capita? I think you will find a wonderful surprise..

our women don't want them here because there's a higher percentage of rapists who come through illegally... higher than our american ratio of rapists to non-rapists. In most places across the globe, illegal immigrants have higher rates of crime. But you people keep trying to take out the "illegal" out of our statements and just say "immigrants" as if we're painting ALL actual legal immigrants that way. Regardless, not racism... there are immigrants, legal and illegal of all races... but keep trying. Man, if Oliver wasn't so funny...

It's not only about building a wall but to higher more man power, build better facilities, and give them the necessary equipment and tech that is needed to handle this high influx of illegal aliens coming into this country. And of course claiming asylum is 100% legal. There's no law that says you can't. Anybody can claim asylum or refugee status. (key word there, *anybody)* What the law stipulates is HOW and WHY you claim asylum. Simply saying, "I was threatened by a gang." or "I'm here to work." is not gonna fly. Because *anybody* can claim asylum. Hint, hint.
Melissa Henriquez (2 days ago)
+BenJamin Croft step one: don't put children in cages and separate them from their parents step two: realize these people are running from extreme violence and have risked everything for a chance to survive step three: have actual experts that have experience with asylum immigration along with humanitarian efforts create an immigration plan that is effective in getting these people the aid they need and where money goes into reviewing cases and giving approved peoples the resources to thrive in this country instead of wasting money on sending troops that are not thoroughly trained to help asylum seekers (which is 100% legal by the way) to the border to look "strong" in the face of people we consider "weaker"

10,000 people marching on your border? If you call it an invasion you are racist apparently. Thanks for making me dumber today John
BenJamin Croft (7 days ago)
+nisse None of them have a legitimate claim to asylum or refugee status anyway. If you are from a country where you have undergone persecution, or you have a well-founded fear of being persecuted if you return to that country, you may decide to seek either refugee protection from the U.S. (if you are currently overseas) or asylum (if you are currently in the United States). However, the criteria for these protections are stricter than you might expect. You will need to become familiar with the legal grounds for asylum and refugee status, and potentially prepare extensive materials showing that you meet these grounds. None of these people have done any of this. Simply saying, "I'm here to work." is not gonna fly.

BenJamin Croft (7 days ago)
Try and keep a cool head and think logically about this. Be passionate it about it but know and understand what it is you're being passionate about before you start. For instance, there never is and there never was a "law" telling the Border Patrol, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), or even the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS); that after catching and detaining illegal alien parents with children, to then separate these children from their parents. There isn't even a blanket policy or procedure either. Don't let shows like these emotionally manipulate you.

We caused the issues in central America and now we act flabbergasted that we have to pay the price for it. So instead of accepting responsibility we elect to psychologically torture children of the people who's lives were ruined bc of our policies. Ann Coulter is probably masturbating furiously to the video of that little boy crying bc of what happened to him. But knowing right wingers, they only care if it's happening to white men and if it's a white woman, only if the guy is brown or black.
Pick Collins (7 days ago)
+BenJamin Croft no. But sending the military to the border, and mercilessly ripping families apart (something we only did in extreme circumstances under Obama) is not the answer

Mohammed Sadaf (12 days ago)
Yet there are still people that say "It's the parents' fault for putting the kids in this situation". Okay, lets analyze the options they have. They can stay in their countries, where they are not only extremely poor, but have to live with increasing gang, sexual, or domestic violence. Even worse, their governments are too poor to help them rebuild their lives. This is why the are forced to come to the US. Not only is applying for asylum legal, but they have a much larger chance of fixing their economic struggles and living a more peaceful life. Would you blame someone for trying to fix their and their families' struggles in a legal way? Would you blame them for the harsh treatment that OUR government decided to needlessly put on them?
Mohammed Sadaf (7 days ago)
But y not just deport the kids back WITH their parents?
nisse (8 days ago)
Mohammed Sadaf because you can’t arrest children it actually mean you have to separate them
Mohammed Sadaf (8 days ago)
+nisse True, but being unable to arrest migrant kids doesn't mean that we have to physically separate them from their parents. Because when kids as young as 2 months are separated, not only are the parents deported back, but the kids are also mentally scarred as John Oliver showed above. If you wanted to keep out migrants, it would be better to deport back the ENTIRE family, rather than separate them between countries where these people can get lost in the system.
nisse (9 days ago)
+Mohammed Sadaf yeah I can agree that the rhetoric trump uses is extreme etc.. but the thing about separating families is really ridiculous. I mean in the us you can't arrest children thus if you cross the broder ILLEGALLY you have to separate them because you can't arrest the child. Being poor does not give you any refugee status so no I don't think its a reason that we should let migrants in for.
Mohammed Sadaf (9 days ago)
I may have been somewhat hyperbolic, but you still have to admit the way we are demonizing and treating these migrants is pretty messed up, especially considering most of them are just trying to escape a bad life and start a new, better one.

So yeah. It is their job.

The Center for Immigration Studies is owned by white nationalist John Tanton & is nothing but an anti-immigration "think tank" as his organizations call themselves. They especially don't want minority immigration. I know why FOX news uses them on their shows but the other networks & programs? There should be a disclaimer any time 1 of John Tanton's 13 anti-immigration organizations is interviewed or quoted from. https://www.adl.org/news/article/funders-of-the-anti-immigrant-movement

Instead of "Founders of the Anti-Immigration movement", replace it with "Founders of the Anti-Illegal-Alien movement".

Oh my god. Videos dont make me cry. Things dont make me cry. But. That video of that small child crying, and wanting to go to jail becuase he is small. He doesn't know what suicide is. He is young. Anyone older than him would have already kill themselves. This is the one thing that has made me cry. No kid should go through what that kid is going through. There are millions of kids going through the same thing. This makes me sick. They fucked that kid up so bad. That young poor innocent kid. What did they do to him?

They didn't do anything because *there never is and there never was a "law"* telling the Border Patrol, U.S. So its really the mother's fault.

Omitted from Oliver's story is why the caravan and others are headed north. Between 1798 and 1994 the U.S. was responsible for 41 changes of government south of its borders. So the Haitians elect a president friendly to the poor...and the U.S. kidnaps him and dumps him in Central Africa. So the U.S. has been attacking its southern neighbors militarily, politically and economically for literally centuries. In the wake of NAFTA, Mexican real median incomes declined 34%. One has to revisit the Great Depression in the U.S. to find that kind of income decline. Maybe we can think of the undocumented as "late Okies," then. Many in the "caravan" are fleeing the consequences of global-warming-induced drought in their areas. Gee, I wonder whose economy is producing the most carbon? So the attacks on immigrants are just as often a version of blaming the victim, too.
